You Should Never Leave Your Health Decisions To Your Doctor.

CAVEAT: I AM NOT A MEDICAL DOCTOR AND DO NOT OFFER MEDICAL ADVICE. NEITHER IS THIS AN ATTEMPT TO UNDERMINE THE MEDICAL PROFESSION. THIS POST IS JUST AN ACCOUNT OF A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, THEREBY FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY. READERS ARE ADVICED TO SEE DOCTORS FOR DUE CONSULTATIONS AND TREATMENT. THANKS.

Health they say is wealth; a man without his health is surely losing his wealth in trickles. For if he has no health, how does he pursue his wealth. With the abundance of information on the internet today, it is disheartening to realize that people are dying in their scores from ailments that could be salvaged if they made conscious efforts to seek knowledge about their illnesses. The past few weeks have been medically challenging for yours truly. I have been tested and re-tested, diagnosed and re-diagnosed, treated and re-treated. Being prodded with tens of injections, until my butt got sore (just a little above 20).
One thing that has helped me so far is the volume of knowledge I had garnered during this period. I was able to learn more about my ailment. My medical appointments are usually like colleagues chatting over a cup of coffee. (Na lie, I was in pains.:( ) As the doctor offers his thoughts, I add a few of mine. If he prescribes a drug, I talk about the contra-indications and adverse reactions. I may be perceived as inquisitive or showboating, rather I’m just someone who badly needs relief and will go to any length to get it. There’s always a glint in the doctors eyes when we discuss ME. With the way I use the few medical terms I know and call drugs by their “active ingredients”, they know I’ve made an attempt. All these has been possible through the help of the internet and medical sites like webmd.com, mayoclinic.com, nhs.com etc. mayoclinic remains my favorite, because of the ease of use. Their symptom checker seems the most efficient of all I’ve used. Before I even had my first appointment, I already had an idea of what the doctor would say. And when he says something I’m not familiar with, I ask questions on why it should be his thoughts. So while the doctor is using his medical lingo, I can relate with him at least a little. I will not gape and panic when he says a big medical term. Because I have an idea with respect to his diagnoses.
The internet has made information easier and accessible. Typing your symptoms into google would give you more than enough information. This would provide you with at least a lay man’s understanding of your ailment. If some terms are vague to you, further search on such terms would help. You could also note the terms and give to your doctor for explanation.

How I developed this interest is a story that needs to be told. I once saw a movie couple of years ago titled “Lorenzo’s Oil ”. It is about Lorenzo* a boy boy who was diagnosed as having adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), (which is usually fatal within two years) and the efforts of his parents** at finding a cure.

This movie has had a terrific impact in my life. It has made me to realize that “He who wears the shoe, knows where it pinches most.” Therefore, it is your prerogative to know as much as possible about your ailment if you can. It will surely help in your diagnosis, treatment and of course prognosis. While I do not support that you self diagnose and treat yourself, I do believe doctors are humans and there must be a reason why they call their profession a “practice”. More so, the dynamic nature of knowledge indicates that relying on old information is worse than having no knowledge at all.
I may come off as being forward and all, but experience has taught me to know about what’s wrong with me before seeing a doctor so I won’t just be in the dark. You may be seen as pesky too, but both the patient and the doctor should be able to work it out. I’m not trying to take over your job. Its about me getting healed.
In my next post, I will be discussing how to use the net for your medical research and what to do before your next doctor’s appointment.

THANKSGIVING: It’s My Birthday!

Its my birthday today and I’m excited. It’s not just any birthday but a milestone. Looking back at what God has done in my life, I cannot but express my gratitude for how far he has brought me. To be alive today is nothing but the grace of God.

Recently recovering from an ailment that got me bedridden for over six weeks is nothing short of mercy. Coupled with the fact that as at last week, I could not walk without assistance.
Today however, my skelewu is better than before. What more can I say than thank you baba God.

I have truck loads of God’s faithfulness in my life and I will share some in upcoming post.

For he said …“I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” ~ Ex 33:19 (NIV)

With this attitude ot gratitude, I offer my praises to the most high God for counting me worthy of his mercy and compassion.

“1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
2     Worship the Lord with gladness;
    come before him with joyful songs.
3 Know that the Lord is God.
    It is he who made us, and we are his[a];
    we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving
    and his courts with praise;
    give thanks to him and praise his name.
4 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
    his faithfulness continues through all generations.” ~Ps 100

Yes, the future is bright and more opportunities needs to conquered. New horizons need to be embraced. Yet the lord that has brought me this far will see me through the end. So here’s to the Amen.

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Ps 90:12

The Journey of Nigerian Porn Music Videos

Porn Music Videos are not a recent thing. I believe it is the branch of the proverbial Iroko seedling that we failed to prune. Which has now grown large. Porn music videos are the offshoots of musical pornography.

Growing up in the 80’s, when High- life and Juju genres of music were a staple diet of Nigerians sure has its perks. I remember the likes of KSA and the supposed meanings of some of his tunes. Examples include; kodi is mi bo se nkodi so ko re loru (turn your backside to me, just like U do to your husband during the night.) Or Sir victor Olaiya’s baby jowo,(70’s) recently remixed with tu face, containing lyrics like, baby jowo… Ko wa fun mi loyan tutu mu O! (Baby please… Give me chilled boobs to suck). These lyrics had quite an imprint on my “innocent” mind back then and also played a role in my understanding of sexuality, female anatomy and its thrills. Fast forward to the early 2000’s, we had Eedris abdul kareem’s Mr lecturer, extolling the lewd & indecent intimate student – lecturer relationships. Coming to a more recent time we have the likes of dj zeez with, Bobby FC which boasts of lyrics like booby e, o nja mi laya. (Your boobs are scaring me.) Or Skailey mental’s “meji loyan, okan loko” which ruled the airwaves till it was banned by NBC.

The essence of this short refresher course is that musical pornography is not a new thing in the Nigerian music industry. And we have celebrated & enjoyed it at one point or the other.
Music artist such as Wande Coal or Iyanya are just taking it up a notch with their music videos.

Now shall we continue to let this prevail. No! However, bodies like the NBC saddled with the responsibilities or vetting broadcast contents might not only be busy as sarcastically implied by Yinka Olatunbosun in this article, they may also have their roles upside down. I say this because most of NBC’s actions are more reactionary than proactive. The music/entertainment industry has grown, thanks to the internet and private TV stations. Therefore more proactive measures need to be in place.

I believe there should be a “working” structure where songs, music videos are screened & rated before release, for public consumption. (Isn’t that the job of NBC?)

Secondly, defaulters of such standards should be sanctioned accordingly. Probably a fine or career suspension as the case may be.

Till we do this, I won’t be surprised when music videos start baring totally nude girls. Because it is obvious there is a loop hole somewhere that needs to be plugged.

Is this the new face of okada?

With state governments placing a ban on commercial motorcycles in nigeria, manufacturers are taking on the challenge and carving ways to beat government policies. I stepped out this morning on my way to work and I saw a bike with an umbrella. At first I thought wow! This would be nice. But how strong is the umbrella. I shrugged and continued walking to my junction. Few minutes later, the same motorcycle came to ask me if I was going out. I said no, I was waiting for a colleague. Just before he left the colleague arrived and we had to board his bike.

On closer inspection, what I thought was a makeshift umbrella, was actually factory fitted. The spikes are strong and the mechanics are ☺k. However, that doesn’t mean a fierce wind won’t cause harm!

Lessons from the 48 laws of power.

The 48 laws of power by Robert Greene is no doubt a wonderful and powerful book. Though old, it has never ceased to generate comments sentiments and reactions. Several readers have their reservations about the book or those who have read it. However, reading the book again recently with a liberal mind, has opened my eyes to certain facts,which has informed the writing of this article.

I got to understand that power as referred to in that book, is not necessarily a position nor authority, but the fact that there are other forms of power that are more subtle yet more efficient than coercion.

No matter how much people criticise the book (48 laws of power), each and every one of us, has embedded in us a few of those laws and we use them at will without fore thought. How many times have you tried getting some girl/guy’s attention by showering attention on someone else?

The 48 laws of power is not a book for squashing the enemy or usurping the throne. Neither was it written by power hungry Greene for his followers. IMO, the book is just a glimpse into the psychology of men and how they see themselves. Man’s struggle to attain self actualization and social acceptability. In other words, it’s a book about man’s selfishness, his insecurities and how he feeds it.

All the laws have different seasons and situations they can be applied. Some are applicable when aspiring to reach the top, others while at the top. Some are applicable with contemporaries, others with juniors or seniors. Some with groups, others with individuals. The bottom line, whatever phase in life, there is an applicable law.

All the laws are tools. They can either be used appropriately or not.

Have a great day! 😀
