1. You Are Not Using Your Real Name.
There’s a new fad (not really new) on social media now that I think is annoying and an Achilles heel to thousands of job seeking youths in Nigeria. It’s the stupid fad of name transliteration. I see a lot of people changing their names just because they want to look
trendy stupid. You see people change OLAMIDE TO HORLARMEDAY, OLUWASEYI TO HOELUWHASHAYEE, AJAYI TO HARJAYEE. While this may thrill you at the moment, it is the Trojan horse that will sabotage your job search in the nearest future. Imagine a certain Olamide Oluwaseyi invited for an interview. During the course of the interview, the interviewer asks for his Facebook page because he couldn’t find it. Olamide then starts trying to spell his version of his name as Horlarmeday. How does that portray your personality?
2. You Don’t Know How To Use Social Media As A Job Seeking Tool.
Social media is here to stay, whether we like it or not. Facebook has over 11 million active users and twitter has over 6 million active Nigerians users That is a huge lot of people. Every serious business is getting on social media to reach more people. When they need more hands on desk, their first port of call is social networking sites. As a job seeker, you need to know How To Use Social media to Land Your Dream Job in Nigeria. Tap into this wonderful resource and use it to your advantage. Follow the companies you’d like to work with on twitter, like them on Facebook, follow job-sites on these sites, e.g. jobbermandotcom, nigerianjobsonline. You might get lucky.
3. You Have Not Branded Yourself.
So many people don’t know why they are on social media. Neither do they see themselves as a brand. Yet the truth is; not only blue chip companies have brands, every single person on planet earth has a brand. It is how you want to be perceived and what you want to be known for. Each time you see the color yellow, what comes to your mind? MTN abi? Good. When you see the phrase “everywhere you go” MTN comes to mind. When you see the Big elephant First bank comes to mind (chai! see free advert). As these companies have built their brands, so are you a brand too. Are your social media profiles a true representation of you? Will a prospective employer be happy to employ you after checking your profile? What image does your social media profile project about you?
4. Your Updates Are Trash:
It is now so common on social media sites for users to tweet nudes for follow backs or to trend a particular topic e.g. #worldcleavageday from hate tweets, tweetfights and nude pictures, many jobseekers are shooting themselves in the leg with their social media updates. don’t be surprised when you go for job interviews and your interviewer pulls off a nude picture of you.
Social media sites can be fun and interesting. You can go ahead and bash the governor of your state, abuse the president, tweet your nudes. Just remember the internet never forgets.
